Paint & coating calculator.
Litres of paint per coat from surface area, dry film thickness, volume solids and application losses.
How it's calculated.
The theoretical spreading rate of a paint depends on its volume solids and the dry film thickness:
TSR (m²/L) = 10 × volume solids (%) ÷ DFT (µm)
Litres = area ÷ TSR ÷ (1 − loss)
Losses cover overspray, surface roughness, complex sections and wastage. Typical structural steel surface areas run from roughly 10 to 40 m² per tonne depending on section sizes; take it from the drawings where possible.
